Brackets <like this> or [this] are a sign since at least the silver age Marvel years that someone's speaking a non-main language. Rebus bubbles mean that the general gist of a thing is coming across to a listener even if the specifics aren't. A fluent speaker of Tex-Mex myself, this is a phenomenon I know all too well. >_<
